Larry Kramer (1935-2020)
Larry Kramer was an American playwright, author, and LGBTQ+ rights activist. He co-founded the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), the first AIDS service organization, and later founded ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), a direct action advocacy group that fought for access to HIV/AIDS treatment and advocated for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS. Kramer’s activism and advocacy efforts were instrumental in raising awareness about the HIV/AIDS crisis and promoting LGBTQ+ rights.

Audre Lorde (1934-1992)
Audre Lorde was a Black lesbian poet, writer, and feminist activist who advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, racial justice, and intersectional feminism. She used her writing to challenge societal norms and advocate for the rights and visibility of marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ individuals. Lorde’s work continues to inspire LGBTQ+ activists and writers today.

Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002)
Sylvia Rivera was a Latina transgender woman and a prominent LGBTQ+ rights activist. She was also a key figure in the Stonewall uprising and co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), an organization that advocated for the rights of homeless LGBTQ+ youth. Rivera’s activism focused on intersectionality and addressing the needs of marginalized LGBTQ+ communities, including transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, people of color, and low-income individuals.

Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992)
Marsha P. Johnson was a Black transgender woman and a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising, which is considered a pivotal event in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Stonewall Riots

 The Stonewall Riots, which took place in June 1969 in New York City, are widely considered as a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The riots were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ+ community in response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village. The Stonewall Riots are remembered as a turning point in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, leading to increased visibility and activism for LGBTQ+ rights.

Congress repeals
"Don't Ask Don't Tell"

In the U.S.: In 2010, the U.S. Congress repealed the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy, which had prohibited openly gay and lesbian individuals from serving in the military.
